Year 2 students learned how to use Comics Head Lite, a comic strip generator, among other apps used for story telling. The students worked in groups. They learned to take turns. The students also learned basics of comics strips, for example, using the same background if people had a conversation in the same room and consistency in characters in the story. Below is an example of an unedited version of the comic strips created as we were learning. The students told a story of what they learned during After School Activities in school. This is a skill students will transfer and use in their classrooms.

Year 2 students had an opportunity to speak with an author of children's books via skype. We spoke with Jonathan Emmett who wrote the book 'Pigs Might Fly'. The students had enjoyed the story as Mr Emmett read it to us. they had a chance to ask him questions like "What inspires you to write?" "Why did you become an author?". We had a connection problem during the question and answer session so we had to continue via text messages on skype. It was a good opportunity for the students to practise their reading skills as they read Mr Emmett's responses.
Students are learning about Shpero, a ball that can be controlled using the iPad. Sphero will let students explore problem solving skills where, in Year2, students will see whether bridges they are building in the classroom can with stand a Sphero crossing. Year 5 students went through obstacle courses, getting Sphero to follow a path or direct it to a particular location. Sphero will also be used in secondary school to introduce robotics.
Year 2 students learned about plants. How to grow them, take care of them and why we need them. They used the My Story iPad app to create digital books teaching others how to grow plants. Here are a couple of books picked out from one class; Book1, Book2. My Story is a paid iPad app that teachers and students can use to create digital books using clip art, their own pictures or drawings and voice recordings on each page. Year 2 students learned to use the ChatterPix Kids iPad app to describe objects. We described the different parts and types of computers that we know. Later, in their classroom, students described 2D and 3D shapes to reflect on their learning and show their teachers what they learned. They went around the classroom taking pictures of objects.
Year 2 students practiced sentence construction using the Jumbled sentences 1 free app, one for a series. Through trial and error, students tried out different sentences till they got the correct ones. Then, someone figured there would always be a clue in the middle of the circling words. We will explore Jumbled Sentences 2 and more soon!
